11:13 swick[m]: pq: is the presentation you linked to being discussed in the next w3c meeting or has it happened already?
11:15 pq: swick[m], the email on public-colorweb says it will be discussed in tomorrow's call.
11:15 swick[m]: ah, good. somehow missed that...
11:20 pq: swick[m], it's a bit strange to handle tone mapping somehow fundamentally different from gamut mapping, in that presentation.
11:21 pq: when stuff is drawn to a canvas, you would tone-map it to fit, but you don't gamut map it, because... with floating-point you don't have to? so why do you have to tone-map either?
11:22 pq: hmm
11:22 pq: maybe I should write an email
11:43 JEEB: yea looking at some applications (chromium etc) gamut mapping seems to have mostly been done by clipping or otherwise simply just limiting to the output gamut, while for HDR tone mapping the behavior switches to actual more complex tone mapping :D (it was fun comparing a wide gamut webkit logo encoded with SDR transfer display P3 video and and the same coded as HLG HDR+BT.2020 :D)
11:43 pq: :-p
11:51 swick[m]: one could argue that lack of proper tone mapping is much more noticeable than lack of gamut mapping
12:17 pq: swick[m], I sent an email to that list, but it'll go through manual moderation. I did cc Cameron and Lemieux.
12:31 pq: swick[m], forwarded it to you in case you join the call.
12:38 swick[m]: thanks!
12:38 swick[m]: I think I'll have to create an account for the telco... let's see.
12:59 pq: swick[m], when you look at the "BT.709 primaries and floating point formats" figure on your display, does the red triangle look... restless?

13:17 swick[m]: pq: what do you mean?
13:19 pq: like it's hard to see where exactly it is. shimmering
13:23 pq: reminds me of a presentation discussing color perception explaining "Impression, sunrise" by Monet, which relates to "where" perception using only luminance while there is no luminance difference between the Sun and the sky, causing the Sun to look very... intense
13:24 pq: and the wikipedia photo of that painting totally fails to capture that
13:25 pq: I mean, it's an illusion
